Dr Shaw was nominated for UK's Best Doctor in the National 2023 Who Cares Wins Awards (The Sun, Channel 4, National Lottery). Dr Steve Shaw is a highly regarded cardiologist in Manchester and Cheshire. Known in particular for his communication, compassion and bedside manner, Dr Shaw provides clarity and sense to patients with all types of heart problems in his work as private cardiologist.
Dr Steve Shaw has a wealth of experience at the highest level, having been appointed as a consultant cardiologist in Manchester over a decade ago in 2012. In his NHS practice at Wythenshawe Hospital, he is cardiologist for the advanced heart failure program, one of only six in the United Kingdom. Dr Shaw oversees responsibility for the most poorly heart failure and cardiomyopathy patients in the North West and beyond. He also manages patients after heart transplantation and left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). Dr Shaw is an excellent general cardiologist, able to assess and best advise on all heart related symptoms and concerns. In his work as private cardiologist, his caseload is diverse, ranging from simple heart health checks to being cardiologist to those with end stage chronic heart failure.

Dr Shaw studied medicine at Manchester University from 1994 and qualified as a doctor in 1999. He passed membership exams of The Royal College of Physicians in 2003. He returned to Manchester University to complete a PhD degree in cardiology medical research in 2011. It was here, that he was awarded the Ellen Mitchell Memorial Medal for Manchester University's 'Postgraduate Student of the Year'. This was in recognition of the standard of his research and the international publications surrounding it. Ultimately this helped propel him to become one of the leading heart specialists in Manchester
Dr Shaw has an international reputation in the subspecialty field of Heart Failure. This is a condition where the pumping function of the heart becomes impaired and fails to serve the demands of the body. There are many causes including coronary artery disease and various types of cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease). Dr Shaw has travelled all over the world lecturing and advising in this subject. He has even helped mentor countries with the introduction of ground breaking new treatment including South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia and India. Heart Failure can be an extremely dangerous condition and this demands a meticulous approach to its management in order to improve symptoms and prolong life. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) states that all patients with suspected Heart Failure should be seen rapidly by a specialist for expert evaluation. For those patients already diagnosed with Heart Failure they should be followed up by a specialist every 6 months. Dr Shaw offers an expert outpatient service from The Alexandra Hospital. He appreciates how important your health concerns are to you and how worrying heart related symptoms can be. If tests are booked from a new consultation, you will usually need to book in for a follow up clinic (remote or face to face) to discuss results, unless told otherwise. As helpful as Dr Shaw and his secretarial team try to be, please note that the following cannot be provided for medicolegal reasons:

4. Direct arrangement of tests within the NHS
